Signal 8 Security Services Malta Ltd (S8S) is a private company set up purposely to provide a whole range of professional security services for various entrepreneurs and the community in general. S8S employs professional expertise; we are proficient in carrying out on-site surveys to establish the vulnerabilities that exist within premises, and giving written advice of precise security measures that need to be equipped.
At S8S we provide outstanding supervision for all our contracts. We continually strive to improve and keep up-to-date with any means of feedback on the performance of our personnel. We believe this is crucial in understanding what kind of improvement is required to upgrade the service according to the circumstances which may arise from time to time.
Signal 8 Security Services Malta Ltd. is the only authorized representative of the International Bodyguard Association. The Signal 8 Security Training Department within the company was formed with the intention of providing training solutions for employees who on a daily basis and through their responsibilities face challenging behavior at work. Our experienced and qualified instructors have worked closely with a wide range of established companies, across a variety of sectors. Joseph John Grech (better known as Jovan) was born in Senglea, Malta, on the 21st May 1961. He comes from a family of police officers, and was naturally brought up to think like one. From a young age, he showed interest in policing, and used to spend time with his uncle, who was a Police Superintendent.
He joined the Malta Police Force as a Police Constable, at the age of 22. Jovan was immediately ear-marked to join the elite squad of counter-terrorism formally known as the SMU (Special Mobile Unit). This unit, amongst other commitments, had the role of providing Close Protection for Dignitaries visiting Malta and other VIPs, including the President of Malta. Thanks to this placement, Jovan was given special training, including: Military Combat Training (Missione Militare Italiana), Special Firearms Specialist (Malta Police Force) and Kung Fu (Môn Lung Style) (Malta Police Force).
He was further involved in special assignments, including the Egyptian Air hijack in November 1985, where he was part of a major clean-up after the disaster left by the Egyptian Commandos. Jovan was then entrusted with the security team of the last remaining hijacker, who was being treated in St. Luke’s Hospital, and was also in charge of his escort to and from prison towards the improvised courtroom at Fort St. Elmo. Furthermore, Jovan was chosen to read a course with the US Secret Service, where he specialized in Defensive Marksmanship and VIP Protection. Within three years he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and put in charge of Unit B of the same SMU, a position he held for about 5 years.
Jovan then entered the Nightclub Security business as a door supervisor (bouncer), holding the position of Chief Security in most of the venues he worked at. Throughout these years he successfully dealt with a variety of situations, adopting a versatile approach to create a safe environment for all. As a result of this experience, Jovan is adamant that individuals interested in working in this field must possess the right skills and undergo specialised training so that they can resolve most situations in a calm and assertive manner without the need for physical confrontation. Jovan’s experience has taught him how to protect patrons and how to deal with a variety of situations, and he has developed a versatile approach which helps ensure a safe environment.
In addition, Joseph John is an instructor, qualified to give specialised training and helping bodyguards develop professional skills. He is also responsible for holding courses and seminars on behalf of the association. Jovan was the first to promote and deliver various specialised security courses on the island, among which included bodyguarding courses and training to military, police and civilian bodyguards. His zeal and competence over the years have proved him to be one of the most influential leaders in the security industry on the Maltese islands.
Jovan holds numerous diplomas in the field of Close Protection, such as ‘Threat Management’ ‘Body guarding Skills’ ’IED Searches’ and ‘Counter Surveillance’ to mention a few. The expertise and values of Jovan are imparted with all the security officers of Signal 8 Security Services Malta Limited and help create a highly disciplined team capable of dealing with any situation they may encounter during the execution of their duties.
In December 2008, he was asked to deliver a speech (Case-Study) at the East-West Security Conference. For the last 10 years, Jovan’s vision to improve the security profession in the leisure industry has been high on his agenda. He is the founder of the first security company to provide door staff to nightclubs and the popular parties. He closed this company to set up another, further improved organisation, which expanded to form Signal 8 Security Services Malta Ltd: a company with a clear mission to better the security industry in general. The values which led to Signal 8’s success reflect those which form Jovan’s personality and attitude: determination, ambition, hard work and a continued commitment to always be the best in the industry.
Jovan believes that unless the industry sets itself higher standards as far as training and qualification requirements are concerned and is better protected by the law, local security companies and businesses are leaving themselves open to all sorts of liability risks. He is calling for the security industry to be regulated in the interests of all stakeholders and the business in general, which include the clients and the same people working as security guards.

Signal 8 Security has at its disposal numerous types of equipment to ensure full coverage of security services, such as VHF radio equipment, video and audio surveillance equipment, camera monitoring console rooms, trackers, alarms and beepers, safeguarding tools such as barriers, road blocking equipment, and other communication equipment.
We have our own guard shelters and we monitor many of our contracted points using our own patrol cars.
We at Signal 8 Security Services Malta Ltd. believe that one of the core elements of providing an effective manned security service is the performance monitoring of security personnel. It is also important to create a transparent relationship with customers that facilitate the ability for them to have real time access to information relating to patrol activities on their assignments. The Guard Buddy Pro system has been designed to ensure a quick and effective method of managing the patrol activities of security officers. Backed by the ‘Guard Buddy Pro’ which is only a normal Nokia mobile set (pic. below), our patrolmen will randomly or on a pre-determined route (set out by you), patrol and log in on the strategically placed patrol points throughout the environment being patrolled by the officer. The Patrol points are micro chips and the mobile equipment will certify that the patrol has been carried out, as desired. No wiring is required between patrol points which enable quick and simple installation.
Patrol Points are low cost tags and thus encourage volume check points. At your leisure, from anywhere there is an internet connection, you can log on our site and with your password access real time information you may required. You will also have the facility for an electronic print out tailor made to your preference of patrol/visits carried out.
Once the contract is awarded, we at Signal 8 Security Services Malta Ltd are committed to install at our expense the revolutionary technology ‘Guard Buddy Pro’ NFC (Near Field Communications System) to which Signal 8 Security are the sole agents and distributors on these islands. You are only requested a monthly fee of minimum € 6.00 which is to be paid to Mobile Phone sim card service provider of your choice for data transfer.
