We remember the stampede at the 2010 Love Parade in Duisberg, Germany, that left 12 festival-goers dead and at least 500 injured. As uncommon as such incidents are, being prepared to deal with worst case scenarios can put your mind at ease and even save your life. As leaders in security services in Malta, we share some precautions to keep you safe in the midst of potential tensions while at a festival or crowded event.
1. Make note of main and alternate exits
You’ve watched demonstrations on the plane, but this applies to any place where escape may be difficult in an unexpected situation. Whether you’re in a large football stadium or theatre, make note of exits and alternate pathways (in case the main exits become choke points).
2. Stay on the edges of a crowd
As tempting as it may be, avoid making your way to the middle where you risk getting trapped in case of an outbreak or emergency. Avoid standing near barricades, even if you want to be as close to the stage as possible; in the case of music concerts, they’re probably the worst place to be case of a stampede.
3. Keep your belongings safe
Crowded places are a pickpocket’s paradise. Avoid carrying valuable things and keep any money, cards and keys in your front pocket, rather than backpacks or pockets.
4. Agree on a meeting place beforehand
Decide on a meeting place with whoever you’re with before or upon entering the venue, so you can find one another easily in case you get separated.
5. Don’t wait until things get too wild to leave
If you notice a shift in the crowd or increased security presence, leave before it gets any more chaotic. Always your caution and trust your instincts.
